Feeling slightly underchallenged but also underrated, Jesper Munk began his career as a bassist and backing vocalist in a school band – this was just before his A-levels. He taught himself to play the guitar at the time, but his voice was a natural-born gift. Once he’d finished school, his first full-length album was in the pipeline – and it promptly made a giant splash for this German-Danish artist. After “For In My Way It Lies” (2013), and definitely following his second album “Claim” (2015), critics were declaring him Germany’s best male singer – a title he rightly deserves. But Munks’ meteoric rise is not so much down to social media and its catalytic effect, instead owing everything to the unique power of his voice. The repertoire of this non-conformist singer-songwriter ranges freely from wistful chansons and blues standards to sensual neo-soul and smoky bar jazz, which he lightens with a measured dose of pop appeal on his fourth album, “Taped Heart Sounds” (2022), for example. With “Yesterdaze” (2024), released two years ago, Munk once again masterfully blends resonant vocal arrangements and solemn guitar chords, dreamlike remoteness and the intimacy of diary entries with greater virtuosity than ever before. His search for himself – and his style – ended when he stopped looking. His live performances are an unforgettable experience.
