At 8:00 PM EST, we welcome Great Aunt! Great Aunt is a genre-bending folk duo from Australia, known for their soaring harmonies, dynamic instrumentation, and heart-felt live performances. Winners of the 2024 Folk Alliance Australia Duo of the Year, Great Aunt—comprising Megan Bird (mandolin, resonator, acoustic guitar, vocals) and Chelsea Allen (double bass, vocals, percussion)—craft music that is rooted in folk, bluegrass, and roots traditions, yet refreshingly shaped by their diverse backgrounds in punk, jazz, soul, and rock. With foot-stomping rhythm, bombastic bass drum, and richly textured harmonies, their sound is instantly recognisable and wholly original. Great Aunt write music from the heart: “a personal and shared revival” — joyfully, tenderly, and often with a sly wink. Check them out at https://www.facebook.com/greatauntmusic.

At 7:30 PM EST, we welcome back house favorite Betsy Biesenbach. Betsy plays guitar and sings, and over the years has appeared at several Roanoke venues, including 3rd Street Coffeehouse and the Iroquois Club. She also played Festival in the Park's Gazebo Stage for 30 consecutive years. She specializes in folk songs and popular music from the 60s, and prides herself on making middle-aged women cry - in a good way. She is a freelance writer and a frequent contributor to the Roanoke Times, and the author of two books.

    Great Aunt

Raw and austere, simple and bold; full of stomping feet and clapping hands, chants and harmonies, whispered words and soulful lament - that’s the music of Great Aunt. Listen, and you'll hear tales of joy and grief, whiskey and wine, gratitude and purpose-seeking.

Formed in 2016, the duo is a collaboration between songwriter/instrumentalists Megan Bird (mandolin, guitar, vocals) and Chelsea Allen (double bass, vocals, percussion), and draws inspiration from the traditions of old time, bluegrass, and gospel music, with loving and subtle homage to the pair’s diverse background in punk, jazz, roots, and folk music. The instrumentation and arrangements are bare and bold: using only various combinations of mandolin, guitar, or resonator with double bass and percussion, and the sonorous voices of Bird and Allen in harmony.
